Pacific Spirit Park Score-O and Solstice Picnic Wednesday Evening Training
June 19th 2024 6:00pm - 8:00pm
Organizers: Dawn Mooney (Event Director), Joanne Woods (Membership), Stan Woods (Coach), Chris Benn (Controller)
Map: Pacific Spirit Park
This event will be a score-o using the northern portion of the Pacific Spirit Park map, with a mass start at 6:30 pm and a bonus word game.
The score-o will be followed by a picnic at Spanish Banks (grassy area with picnic tables 100 m west of course start/finish). Bring your own food, or bring something to share.
Beginners are welcome and should arrive at 6 pm for instruction.
There is a parking lot directly across NW Marine Dr from the start/finish location. There are bathrooms and water at the Spanish Banks West Concession (150 m east of course start/finish). The concession stand will likely not be open for food service.
75 min Score-O
- Arrive by 6:20 pm for registration, instructions and map distribution.
- Mass start at 6:35 pm.
- Return by 7:50 pm (75 min total). You will receive a 10 point deduction for every minute late.
- Then you will have 10 minutes (from 7:50 to 8:00 pm) to make as many 5 letter words as you can from the letters you collected on the course (each control flag has a letter printed on it - see scoring details below). If you return earlier, you can spend more time making words.
- You can return earlier if you prefer a shorter event. You can start later if you arrive late or prefer to avoid the mass start, but you still must return by 7:50 pm.
Scoring details:
- There are 24 controls, worth 10, 20, or 30 points, for a total of 480 points.
- Each control flag has a letter on it. Record the letter in the last column of the control description table. (Make sure to bring a pen or pencil!)
- Calculate the total points for the controls you got.
- Subtract 10 points for every minute late you returned (after 7:50 pm).
- Make as many 5-letter words as you can from the letters you collected and add 1 point per word to your total score. You may not use a letter multiple times in a word, unless you have collected multiples of that letter (eg you would need two Z's to make PIZZA). The event director decides whether words are admissible. The event director is Canadian, so will accept American and British spellings unpredictably.
Please note that the park has experienced quite a bit of storm damage since the map was updated - including a tornado in 2021! Many downed trees and stumps are not mapped, and Admiralty Trail (parallel to NW Marine Dr) has been rerouted in places.
Please register by Tuesday night. See who is coming here.
