August 14th 2019 6:30pm - 8:00pm
Organizers: Kate Karamycheva (Event Director), Adam Woods (Controller)
Map: Roche Point
Description
This week's WET is in a mixed park/forest/urban area in North Vancouver. It has something for everyone!
The weather forecast is 22 degrees, partly cloudy, no rain—perfect for an orienteering night.
3 courses offered:
- Beginner – For beginners
- Expert – For experienced orienteers
- Elite – For experienced orienteers who want a physical challenge of a longer course with more elevation
This will be a good practice for the BC and Western Canadian Championships in a couple of weeks!
Schedule
6:15pm: Introduction to Orienteering for Beginners
6:30pm: Starts
8:00pm: Course Closure, participants must report to the Finish before leaving
Courses
The beginner course is 1.6 km, all on trails, with a mix of park and urban running. Great for children or those looking for an introduction to orienteering.
The expert course is 2.5 km, short and technical. It is mostly in the forest and visits a variety of terrain before finishing with a few controls in the urban area.
The elite course is 4.5 km, similar difficulty as the expert, but longer. It includes a good amount of forest orienteering, but also takes you on a tour of the local urban sightseeing. Not to be missed!
Please note that the map scale is 1:5000.
Safety Precautions
Always use good judgement and common sense. Carry a whistle at all times. Take care when crossing roads and parking lots. Watch out for other runners, cyclists, and trail/sidewalk users.
Parking/Start Location:
We'll meet on the north side of the soccer field in Roche Point Park next to Sherwood Park Elementary School. See map below.
There is free street parking on Dollar Road that leads into the park, as well as on Fairway Drive.
If you're taking public transit, bus 22 stops a block away from the park.
I don't think there are washrooms nearby - nearest ones might be at Cates Park a few minutes' drive away, and at the strip mall plaza on Dollarton Highway (where Nesters Market and RBC are).
Post-Event Dining
TBA -- probably in the plaza off Dollarton.
