Organizer: Dawn Mooney (Event Director)

Map: Jericho Beach

Come out and enjoy a last daylight (somewhat) WET at Jericho Beach! A beach, a woods, and a hill course will be on offer. Sunset will be at 6:38 pm, so the start will be open from 6:15 pm to take advantage of the light. Bring a headlamp though, as darkness will fall, and you may be in the woods when that happens.

To prepare for the upcoming Lynn Valley Adventure Run, the courses will be Score-O format - but with a few twists. Each course will begin as a point-to-point course, and then you will enter a "box" where the remaining controls will be scattered around and you can collect them in any order. Once you finish collecting the scattered controls, make your way back to the start/finish.

Courses

  1. The Beach: this will be suitable for beginners, and will be a good warm-up for runners who wish to do all three courses.
  2. The Woods: this will be a little more challenging, and a little more dark. Some will want to do this first to do it in daylight.
  3. The Climb: this will be more physically challenging, and a longer distance, as it will go across 4th Ave and up the steep hill to 8th Ave.

You can do as many courses as you want, in any order.

Schedule

  • 18:00-18:30: Beginner coaching
  • 18:00: Start opens
  • 20:00: Course closure

Registration

Register by Tuesday at midnight to guarantee yourself a map.

Meeting Location

See pin below. We will be just west of the Jericho Beach Concession. There is free parking on 4th Ave west of Wallace St, or a paid lot accessed from Point Grey Rd or 2nd Ave.

Notes

The Parks Board has been clearing a lot of undergrowth in the wooded areas, so rely more on point features and trails rather than vegetation. A lot of dark green areas are now more open. The map has not been updated as the clearing work is ongoing.

Don't forget a headlamp!

Wednesday Evening Training

  • What should I bring? Wear something comfortable that you don't mind getting a little dirty! If it's wet outside, you might want to consider a change of shoes and socks! A headlamp or flashlight and reflective clothing is critical in the winter months (late September to April). A compass is optional (we have extra ones for borrowing). For added safety, a whistle is mandatory for all GVOC events. Read more in the WET Introduction to Orienteering.

When should I sign up? Please sign up by Tuesday night so that we can print enough maps, although we have extra maps if you forget.

How much does it cost? All WETs are free with yearly membership.

Club membership: See details on the club home page. Please complete before your first event!
