24 June Update: See updated times below to accommodate those who want to see Canada's next World Cup match!
Come join us for a fun mix of forest and urban orienteering at Princess Park and Lower Fromme. Lower Fromme is a new forest map on some lovely, fairly open slopes (well, open by North Van standards!), with a dense trail network and some really fun orienteering. If there weather stays warm you should consider bringing water and maybe a snack if you're doing the longer courses.
Meeting Location and Washrooms:
Meeting location will be at the picnic shelter close to the parking lot off Princess Avenue: https://maps.app.goo.gl/6FkNsDTPPNV3KDha6
Washrooms: Washroom available at the park, beside the parking and a few hundred meters from the meeting location
Schedule (Updated 24 June):
9:00am to 9:30am: Registration
9am to 10am: Starts (Note: registration closes at 9:30am so please arrive by then to allow the registration team time to run)
12pm: Course closes. All participants must return to the finish and sign out so that we know you have returned safely.
Courses:
Note: Courses updated as of 22 June. If you signed up before that and there were changes to the course you signed up for, I'll have a few extra maps of the similar courses for you to choose between.
- Beginner: 1.9km - All on trails and urban areas and parks adjacent to Princess Park. The course will involve road crossings so kids will need to be accompanied by an adult.
- Intermediate: 2.4km - mostly on trail and around urban areas and parks adjacent to Princess Park. The course will involve road crossings so kids will need to be accompanied by an adult.
- Advanced: 2.8km - although not much longer than the intermediate course, this will be quite a bit harder, both due to having a chunk of uphill near the start and more technical orienteering. This course will explore a bit of Princess Park but will also do a section on the Lower Fromme map and adjacent park areas.
- Expert Short: ~3km - REMOTE START AND FINISH - This will be the same technical difficulty as the Advanced Long course and use may of the same controls on the Lower Fromme map but will be shorter and will take advantage of a remote start and finish. This will suit folks who want the challenge of the long course but don't want to do the full distance. Option to drive or walk up to the remote start, allow about 15mins each way if walking. Download and sign out will be back at Princess Park - participants must come back to let us know you have finished the course safely.
- Expert Long: 5.4km (optional short-cut) - REMOTE START - In order to make the most of the Lower Fromme map, the advanced courses will have a remote start, approximately 1km from Princess Park so allow about 15 minutes to walk to the start. The course will finish back at the registration area so you can leave bags etc. there. This course will be technically and physically challenging as the Lower Fromme area has a dense (and sometimes confusing) trail network and a decent amount of uphill. But it's a really fun map and there will be an two optional short-cuts if you decide that it's a bit much. This course has an expected winning time of around 75minutes so earlier starts are highly recommended for most people. If you're on the fence, give it a try and skip a few of the further away ones if it ends up being a bit long for you!
