Map: Stanley Park South

This year's WJR & AGM will be at Coal Harbour Community Centre. The orienteering courses will use the Coal Harbour section of the Stanley Park South map, which was extended and updated by Alton Ho and Jonathan Harris this year, and now includes the Convention Centre. The courses will not go into Stanley Park, but will include a mix of parks, seawall, urban streets lined with shops and apartment buildings, and some office buildings with a little bit of multi-level fun. Please be careful when crossing the cycling paths along the seawall, and cross all busy streets at corners, and at crosswalks where available. The Vancouver Christmas Market is set up in Jack Poole Plaza, so that area of the map is closed. The market doesn't open until 11:30 am, so it shouldn't impact us too much, but note that this area may be quite busy. The market is also a fun idea if you want something to do after!

The room we have booked in the community centre opens up onto the seawall, so you can enjoy staying dry and warm before and after the orienteering. The start and finish will be right outside the community centre and you can leave bags and clothing inside the room. The event will be followed by a social and AGM, with the club providing pizza.

Note that this event is on a Saturday - we could not get the room for Sunday.

Courses

  • Beginner: 2.7 km, 15 controls
  • Intermediate: 3.9 km, 22 controls
  • Expert: 5 km, 30 controls

Note that the beginner and intermediate courses are very similar to the courses used at the International Cartographic Conference WET, so consider choosing a different course if you were at that event.

  • 9:30 am: Registration opens - inside Coal Harbour Community Centre

  • 11 am: Last start
  • 12 pm: Courses close

Why Just Run

What should I bring? Wear something comfortable that you don't mind getting a little dirty! If it's wet outside, you might want to consider a change of shoes and socks! A compass is optional (we have extra ones for borrowing). For added safety, a whistle is mandatory for all GVOC events. Read more in the WJR Introduction to Orienteering.

How much does it cost? Regular "Why Just Run:" events cost adult: $15 / under 20: $10/ family discount (adult(s) with children) 40% (we now accept credit and debit cards on site). Some special events may cost a little more, and this will be made clear in the event detail above. Annual club membership is also required.

Club membership: See details on the club home page. Please complete before your first event!

Refunds: If a participant is unable to attend an event for any reason the event organizer may refund the event fees (at their discretion) but the processing fees will not be refunded.
