There may be some people still out there but Ben Smith narrowly took both the bike and the foot double! I hope everyone enjoyed it and sorry for the few mapping mistakes that caused some trouble. Only one person claimed #35, but it was definitely in the wrong place (by 200m!!!). If you finished, please email me your time and score. - Alistair

To change it up this week I’ve decided to sneak in a short rogaine (or as GVOC normally calls them, a Score-O)! My family recently spent a year living in Wellington New Zealand where they have a very popular “Afterwork Rogaine” series. They were super fun and I’ve borrowed a lot of the elements they use to run a successful event.

There are two categories: 90-minute run/walk or a 60-minute bike (but please feel free to go for any length).

If you've never done a Score-O or Rogaine they are pretty simple - you choose your own route and try to collect as many points as you can within the time limit.

The controls are identical for both categories; however bikes are limited to which trails they can use. I’ve tried to mark the no-bike trails on the bike map, but please pay attention when you are out there.

Both courses are beginner friendly. The biking is non-technical and a light duty hybrid should be sufficient. The southern half of the map is especially friendly for young kids so I encourage families to try this by bike (I tested it with my boys and we had a lot of fun).

Remember that these events are to be biked/run/walked individually (or in family groups) obeying all the social distance recommendations currently in place. However, for your personal safety please let somebody know where you are and what you are doing. I also strongly recommend trying this outside of “peak” hours. Either early morning or midday during the week seems best. Evenings and weekends have been getting quite busy at PSP.

I’ve located the start at our usual location along 16th Ave (https://goo.gl/maps/yrveJ1hTdvHqC5ceA), but please feel free to start wherever you want. There seems to be lots of parking along 16th without getting too crowded.

Some details:

Controls

The controls are all Question-and-Answer format. When you sign up, I’ll send you a sheet with the questions and you fill out the answers. This system is not a test about answering the questions correctly, but more of a way for you to confirm you’re in the right place. If the question isn’t crystal clear it’s probably my fault for thinking something was obvious. If you can’t find the answer, write “claim”.If a significant number of people claim, that’s fine. If you’re the only one, then….

The controls are on a distinctive feature at the center of the circle. The Q&A will direct you to a item at that location or very nearby.

Scoring

Each control point is worth the first digit times 10, ie control 44 is worth 40 points. Get as many as you can in the time, lose 10 points for each minute you are back late. Email me your score and time once you’re finished.

Maps

Because our insurance policy requires that everyone who participates in a GVOC event is a member of the club, please reply to this email or email gvoc.membership@gmail.com for a copy of the event map (Pacific Spirit is not very well georeferenced, so we won’t use MapRunF).
