Description

This week's WET will take place on the Jericho Beach map, with courses ranging from nice easy run along the beach to complex navigational puzzles with lots of route choice!

For those new to orienteering, the Adventure courses will be a good introduction to navigation while still allowing you to enjoy the variety of terrain this map has to offer, hopefully without getting (really) lost!

For experienced orienteers, we'll have a Dog-Bones style course to spice things up a bit. For a "Dog-Bones" course, controls are in pairs and must be visited as a pair, in either direction, and pairs can be done in any order. The training tip for this week is "keep the map oriented". Keeping your map oriented makes navigating a lot easier because the trails on the map line up with the real life trails! Practice keeping your map pointed north even when you change directions.

We'll start at the Aberthau Mansion, see below for more details. Please sign up by Tuesday afternoon so we know how many maps to print. See you all there!

Schedule

6:15pm Introduction to Orienteering for Beginners

6:30pm Starts

8pm Course Closure, participants must report to the Finish before leaving.

Courses

Long Adventure = This course is for those interested in a long run but new to navigation! The course is around 5 km long as the crow flies so you can bet you'll be running farther! There are 16 controls to keep your mind busy while your legs churn!

Short Adventure = For those new to navigation and want to start off with a shorter course. This is also our youth/family friendly course!

Dog-Bones Long = Experienced navigators who would like to hone their skills on the long course! Same as the short O-course with a few more dog-bones.

Dog-Bones Short = For experienced navigators who would like to run a shorter distance.

Safety Precautions

Always use good judgement and common sense. Carry a whistle at all times. Headlamps are essential to see and be seen. Take care when crossing roads and parking lots. Watch out for other runners, cyclists, and trail/sidewalk users.

Parking/Start/Finish Locations

The Start/Finish is located in the covered area at Aberthau Mansion. There is some parking there as well as at the West Point Grey Community Centre next door.
