Thanks to every one who came out on a lovely sunny evening and enjoyed the scenery and trails in Lynn Canyon. It was interesting to see people taking routes which we hadn't thought of and that running the roads was faster than running the trails even with the additional distance. Kudos to Brian Ellis who ran both courses due to a mixup handing out maps. Thanks to Ian and David for help picking up controls.
Description
This event will take place in the forests around Lynn Valley. It will provide an opportunity to practise long leg route choice. The map is at a scale of 1:7500 which is a bit different to our regular Wednesday Evening Training events so the course legs are longer than you might be used to. We are also placing fewer controls so that you have an opportunity to practise making route choice decisions as there are lots of contours and detours to watch out for. If you plan on being out late please bring a headlamp as it can still be a bit dark in the woods, especially if it is raining.
Schedule
6:15 - Introduction to Orienteering for Beginners
6:30 - Starts begin
8:00 - Course Closure, participants must report to the Finish by Course Closure Time.
Courses:
Two courses will be offered, one of which is shorter and suitable for beginners/families - the controls on this course are in the forest but all on trails. There is some route choice involved.
The Advanced course is long and has major route choice decisions to be made to reduce the additional distance that you will cover. e.g. the course as drawn has a length of 4.9km however the minimum running distance will be around 5.5 km and the maximum running distance could be over 7km.
Safety Precautions:
There are 3 bridges crossing Lynn Creek and these are the ONLY options for crossing the creek. Stay away from the creek sides - the optimum route on the courses don't go near the creek sides.
Parking/Start/Finish Locations:
We are meeting at the Tennis Courts on south side of Westover Road - half way up the hill
Post-Event Dining:
TBA
