Organizer: Louise Oram (Event Director)

Map: Sumas Mountain

Starts available between 12:30-1:30pm, to give you time to drive up the valley. If you are looking for an early lunch on the way, then Fort langley is a nice place to visit (especially if it is a sunny day and you like gelato: http://www.marinasgelato.com/ )

Longest course will have a winning time of about 45 minutes, if you are experienced and want more time in the forest sign up for long advanced. If you want something shorter there will also be a short version of the long course (sharing some legs to allow for comparison). The intermediate course has slightly easier navigation, and is suitable if you have less orienteering experience. It is all forested terrain, so will be harder navigation than the park maps we often experience in town.

Sumas Mountain is a 900 metre high forested hill, located directly by the TransCanada Hwy1 between Abbotsford and Chilliwack. There are plenty of rich contour and rock features, as well as some steep slopes.

THERE IS CONSTRUCTION ON THE LOWER PART OF SUMAS MOUNTAIN ROAD, SO A DETOUR IS NEEDED FROM THE USUAL ROUTE.

To get to the map, take exit 92 from Hwy1 and follow Sumas Rd North. Turn right onto Marshall Rd, then left onto McMillan Rd. After over 1km, turn right onto Mckee road and take it for about 3km, until a T junction with Sumas Mountain Road. Turn left here, and follow for 15km (it turns into Upper Sumas Mountain Road). Follow signs for Sumas Mountain Regional Park. Turn right at Batt Road and then, after 1 km, turn right again at Taggart Road. From this point there is at least 6 km of gravel road, which is bumpy.

Event Report

A fantastic day on the mountain! Just amazing open woods and great terrain. Thanks to Louise for the challenging courses and George Pugh for getting all the gear up the mountain.
