Signed up for LVAR but need a practice run first? Done LVAR for years but want this to be the best one yet? Have no idea what any of this is about but think it'd be fun to check out the area around Cap U with a map and learn to navigate a bit, or a bit better?

Come join us for a fun 1.5hr Rogaine or Score-O or mini Adventure Run or Navigation Race or whatever you want to call it, around Cap U, either as a warm up for LVAR or an event on its own!

Schedule:

17:30 Coaching for new orienteers

18:00 Sign in

18:10 Course notes and event instructions

18:15 Map handout and route planning (please bring along highlighters / markers / pencils to help with route planning). Here's a link to some information that might be helpful when thinking about your route: https://thomasreynolds.wordpress.com/2017/08/02/ro...

18:30 Mass start

18:30 - 20:00 Late starters and early finishers. For any late folks, I'll do my best to get you out on time but the priority will be keeping to the event schedule so you may end up out a few minutes after the main group if you're late. Regardless of start time you MUST be back by 20:00.

20:00 Course closure, must return to the start by this time. You can come back any time before 20:00 but MUST be back by 20:00 or we'll assume you're being eaten by a bear and send a hardy group out to your rescue.... followed by SAR and 911 if we don't find you.

20:10 - 21:30 Pot luck - address to be provided at the event but it's just beside Capilano University

Event Details

This week will we have a 1.5hr Score-0 or Rogaine event. You will be provided a map with a number of checkpoints marked on it. Each checkpoint will be worth a certain number of points (generally the further way and harder to navigate to checkpoints will be worth more points while closer, easier to find checkpoints will be worth less points) and you will be aiming to get the maximum number of points in the allotted 1.5hours. Teams are encouraged but, for simplicity, you can just sign up as an individual and let us know who's on your team on the day. Note that teams are expected to stay together for the duration, no splitting up to cover more ground.

Maps

We will offer two map scales (details below). Both will have the same checkpoints on them, so you will have more checkpoints available on the 1:15,000 map but it will be a bit harder to read (zoomed out so it covers a bigger area).

1:15,000 This is the same map scale as we'll have for LVAR so, if you're planning to run LVAR, I'd recommend using this map and seeing how far you get it 1.5hrs and get a sense for the distance and elevation at this scale. This should help with your route planning at LVAR. This map scale will also suit folks who think they will be running and/or navigate well and figure they'll cover a decent distance.

1:7,500 This will cover a smaller area and will be suitable for folks who don't anticipate covering a large distance, beginners who will take their time to navigate to checkpoints or folks who may decide to walk the event. (Updated from 1:5000 since it covered a really small area and likely wouldn't be much fun for 1.5hrs. The 1:7,500 is still quite legible. The registration page probably won't get updated but the maps will be 1:7,500 not 1:5,000)

Scoring:

Each checkpoint will have the points it is worth printed next to it on the control description list on the map. Your goal at a Rogaine is to get the maximum points possible in the allotted time (in this case 1.5hrs). Don't be too ambitious though, there will be a points penalty for each minute, or partial minute, you or your team (time stops when the last team member gets back since you're supposed to stay together!) is back after 20:00. For LVAR there will be electronic timing which will be used to calculate your score but this will be a more low key event without electronic timing.

For this event we are going to do things a little differently:

Scoring: For this event we're focusing on route planning and predicting as accurately as possible what checkpoints you can get in the 1.5hrs. Before you leave, you or your team will leave your prediction with the organizer. When you get back, you'll calculate your actual score and the winner will be whoever is closest to their prediction. In the interest of keeping this fun, go for your max points and see how close you actually are. Can I stop you "predicting" 10 points going to 1 checkpoint and winning? Nope but where's the fun in that! Additionally, some of the checkpoints will be questions that you will answer to show you were at the correct location eg. What number is the house with the red door to your north east? These checkpoints will be marked on the map but will not have a physical checkpoint for you to find, you'll need to answer the clues to prove you were there. When you get back to the finish, you'll mark your own score sheet or swap with someone else and mark each others. Again, will it be easy to cheat? Yes, but who wants to win like that??

Prizes:

1) Best prediction: As noted above, there will be a prize for the best individual and team prediction. It doesn't matter how far you go or how many checkpoints you get, this is all about planning your route and executing. Don't overestimate yourself but don't sell yourself short either, it's a fine balance!

2) Clear the course (aka get to all the checkpoints): The 1:15,000 map covers a big area and has a lot of checkpoints. I'm pretty confident that no-one will be able to get them all in 1.5hrs but I'm keen to see if anyone can prove me wrong so prize(s) to the first to do it!

Cost & Registration: The event is free but you will need to be a member of the club to take part. Everyone needs to register in advance (event registration link will be on this page once registration is open). There will be no day of registration at the event itself. You can become a member of the club as you go through the event registration process.

Parking and Transit: The 245 and 255 run regularly from Phibbs exchange up to Capilano University, with lots of links to Phibbs. There is free parking along Lillooet Road or paid parking at Capilano University (the closest lot for the potluck is the northern one at the corner of Tantalus Rd and Skeena Rd). There is also EVO parking at Capilano University.
