Post-event Update

Thanks for coming out, everyone! We had a good turnout despite the registration system issues and wet conditions underfoot. Results and GPS tracks are live, but please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

A special thanks to the volunteers for helping it all go smoothly, and to everyone who gave feedback on the courses, as this was my first time planning a WhyJustRun.

Apologies to anyone thrown off by control 51. Review after the event confirmed the control was placed on the correct pit, but the trail below it had been obscured by deadfall, and the branch of the trail above was not mapped. The map has already been corrected for next time!

Friday Update

We are experiencing some problems with our registration system. If you would like to attend but haven't been able to sign up, please email gvoc.events@gmail.com with your name and desired course so we know to print off a map for you.

Payment will be sorted out day of, and your early bird discounts will be honoured.

Briefing

Come out and experience the maze of trails that is Watershed Park!

The map has been updated (thank you, Daniel Widmann!) to reflect development since last year's event, so even runners familiar with the map should find something new and interesting.

While the density of the trail network tends to favour on-trail route choices, some legs on the advanced courses have been planned with forest cuts in mind.

Registration and Payment

The deadline for registering is Saturday, November 16th at noon.

Adult - $20 ($10 early bird pricing until 6pm on Friday, November 15th)

Youth - $10 ($5 early bird pricing until 6pm on Friday, November 15th)

You can view who has signed up here.

Courses (straight line distances)

  • Family Friendly: Due to the dense and confusing trail network in the area, a true beginner course will not be offered at this event, but a map with some easier controls near the start/finish will be provided for families with young children looking to explore.
  • Novice: ~1.4 km, 10 controls. Suitable for those with some urban orienteering experience looking to try their hand at forest navigation.
  • Intermediate: ~3.0 km, 13 controls. A taste of the map's complexity while avoiding the most mazelike areas.
  • Short Advanced: ~4.6km, 14 controls. Technically difficult course focused on the east side of the map. Contains most of the same challenging route choice legs as the longer version. Some elevation change.
  • Long Advanced: ~6.8km, 21 controls. Technically difficult course covering the full extent of the map. Some elevation change.

Schedule

  • 9:30am: Registration opens
  • 10:00am: Start opens
  • 11:00am: Start closes
  • 12:30pm: Courses close. You must report to the finish before leaving, even if not completing the course, so we know not to send out a search party!

Access

  • The best place to park is at the West end of Pinewood Dr (immediately South of Pinewood Elementary School). There will be pin flags from the trailhead there leading to registration at the Scout camp
  • Alternative parking is available at 11440 Kittson Parkway, but you'll need to find your own way to the start from there
  • There is also a direct bus from 22nd St Station with several stops near the park
