Start location has changed!!! See below

Saturday Update:

  • Please remember to respect the social distancing guidelines (2m minimum, especially in line).
  • For groups, only one runner needs to line-up to receive a map. That runner can pay for their group and drop the declaration of health forms for everyone.
  • Starts are okay as early as 7:45am.

MapRunF (Optional)

The course can be accessed in the MapRunF app under "Select an Event > Canada > British Columbia > Vancouver > ". For instructions on setting up the phone app, see the pdf document "How to setup and run MapRunF". Note that if you have an android phone that puts the GPS into sleep mode, that causes issues when attempting to use it for this activity. There is another app called GPS Connected which can also be downloaded and used to lock the GPS to the satellites. Remember to unlock it when you have finished the course.

If you are a beginner and think you might need to know where you are at some point in the event then you have the option to turn on "Display Present Position" and "Display Track" under Options and Settings. This needs to be done before passing through the Start.

GPS watch tracks or other device gps tracks can also be uploaded to the RouteGadget map here

Come join us for a training version of the North Shore classic. This year's event will be lower key, however it will include 3 hour and 6 hour options in the traditional Rogaine/Score-O format.

This year's map is rumoured to include some brand new terrain on the slopes of Seymour!

We are limited to 50 attendees in each category so pre-registration is mandatory and all participants must be members of GVOC (or a member of another local orienteering club). A link to the membership form is here. If you intend to run with a partner (encouraged for rogaines), they must be within your bubble, and please make a note via a comment on the registration.

Participant starts will be spaced out and we will ask that everyone treat this like a training run, respect a 2m buffer, and not touch the control flags.

Map/Terrain

The "Super Seylynn" map covers the whole Lynn Valley/Braemar/Lower Seymour/Rice Lake/McCartney Creek area at 1:15000 scale, with 5m contours.

The terrain around the North Shore is a nice mix of beginner friendly trails and roads that are closer to the start/finish and some more technical terrain further away. Expect rain. Expect lots of climbing.

Part of the map has not been fully surveyed. This is clearly marked with the word "UNMAPPED" in purple. In this area, only contours and the trail network are shown (and some trails have a more generalized shape than normal). Cliffs, boulders, creeks, marshes, and vegetation may be missing. Take care if you gamble by going off-trail in the unmapped area!

Start/Finish Location and Parking

The start and finish will be in the northern most parking lot at Capilano University off of Lillooet road (see pin in the map below). Parking is ~$5 for the day or there is street parking nearby.

Schedule

  • 8:00am - 9:00am - 6 hr course start windows
  • 9:30am - 10:30am - 3 hr course start windows
  • 12:30pm - 1:30pm - 3 hr course finish window
  • 2:00pm - 3:00pm - 6 hr course finish window

Registration and Start Times

All runners must pre-register on the website before the event. We are strictly limited to 50 competitors for each course.

Please arrive just before or within your registration start window. When you arrive you will line up (socially distanced) to pay your entry, drop off your declaration of health, and then line up (socially distanced) to receive your map. When you receive your map your clock starts. There is no pre-race route planning. We will try to record finish times, but would appreciate runners self timing as well. Runners will also be responsible for self scoring (method to be confirmed).

Cost

$15 per entry (there's some additional cost for this event because of the cost of printing the large maps). Please prepay via etransfer (refer to the email sent October 6).

Scoring

We are still figuring out how to scoring will be tracked. Likely runners will have to self score (we are figuring out how to record this). Stay tuned!

Your object is to collect a maximum of points within a given amount of time (3 or 6 hours). Each control will be worth a fixed amount (e.g. controls numbered 31 to 39 will be worth 30 points each, controls numbered 40 to 49 will be worth 40 points each etc.) and each minute late back will reduce your point total. You will lose 20 points for every minute that you are back late so it isn't worth attempting to get that last control if it means you will be back late.

Declaration of Health

On the morning of the event you must fill out the "Declaration of Health form" and bring a printed copy of it with you to the event. If you are sick, do not come to the event.

Physical Distancing:

As we are still in the midst of a pandemic we remind participants that we must all maintain social distancing, hand washing/sanitizing and wearing masks where required. Participants must stay minimum 2m from anyone not in their household bubble and maintain adequate social distance at all time before, during and after running the training course. Participants must follow the directions of event volunteers and maintain 2m spacing during registration and starts.

Do not to touch any of the controls out on course in order to minimize contact points at the event. This event is to be run/walked individually (or within your household bubble), obeying all the social distancing recommendations currently in place.

To help with social distancing and minimize group size, Orienteering Canada guidelines also recommend not socializing at the event site before or after you have done your course.

Safety Precautions

Prepare to be self-sufficient for the duration of your run!

  • All competitors must report to the finish, so we know you're safe.
  • Whistles must be carried. If you don't have a whistle, you may purchase one at registration.
  • BE BEAR AWARE! Become bear aware, and consider carrying bear spray if you're on a longer course and are nervous about bear encounters.
  • We will mark the location of known drinking water sources on the map, but there is no guarantee that they will be operational on the day (they shouldn't have been turned off for winter yet, but no promises). All the water refill stations are close to public washrooms.
  • Consider taking some food if you're on the 3h/6h courses.
  • You may carry a cellphone for emergency usage. Please respect the spirit of the event, and don't use the GPS functionality unless you're hopelessly lost and concerned for your safety. The event director's number will be printed on the map. Note that some areas of the map do not have cell signal.
  • Major rivers can only be crossed on bridges.
  • Beware of mountain bikers, especially on the eastern half of the map.
