Description
Mundy Park is mostly forest trails, so I've tried to make the Long course more interesting...
Long/harder advanced course: "Bones and Boxes" Score-O
There are 4 boxed areas ("A" - "D"), roughly one in each corner of the map. Each box contains 4 controls (except for the Start/Finish box "A" which has three controls and the Start/Finish).
Three of the controls in a box each has a link (a "Dog-Bone") to a matching control in each of the other three boxes. The fourth control in each box is "free" (no link). Click here for an example.
You must go to ALL controls in a box, in any order you like. You must go to all of the boxes, in any order you like. However, to go BETWEEN the boxes, you must follow one of dog-bones.
So, at the Start, decide which box you want to go to first (e.g. box "C"), go to the control with the link to box "C", then follow the route to the control in box "C". Once in box "C", decide which box you want to go to next (e.g. box "B"), go to the other controls in the box and end up at the control with the link to box "B". Once there, do the same for box "D", then end up back in box "A" and the Finish.
(Note: depending on route choice, there may be some doubling back over trails you've already been on - apologies in advance).
When doing all 4 boxes, the course can be up to 6.7km in length. You should run fast and take a headlamp for the darker forest sections.
You can do a shorter version of around 4.5km by only going to 3 out of the 4 boxes (you can decide to do this option at the Start or out on the map if running short on time)
Course Close 8:15pm
Short/easier beginners course:
There will be a regular "point-to-point" course of around 2km.
Schedule
6:15 Introduction to Orienteering for Beginners
6:30 Starts begin
6:45 Mass Start
8:15 Course Closure, participants must report to the Finish by Course Closure Time.
Courses:
Three courses will be offered, one of which is easier/shorter depending on terrain and suitable for beginners/families. The other two are more advanced and either long or medium length.
Safety Precautions:
Bring or buy a whistle. If doing the longest course, bring a headlamp.
Parking/Start/Finish Locations:
Parking lot off Hillcrest St, between Winslow Ave and Foster Ave.
For Start/Finish, follow short trail from northern end of parking lot to open grassy area. There is no overhead cover but there are some large trees, in case it's raining...
