False Creek WET Wednesday Evening Training
February 18th 2026 6:00pm - 8:00pm
Organizers: Reuben Ford (Event Director), Stan Woods (Controller)
Map: False Creek
The False Creek map is at the sprint map standard of 1:4000 scale. It covers a busy area for pedestrians but participants should also take care to cross roads and cycle paths safely. Narrow-pathed residential areas are marked out of bounds to respect the local residents. Despite this there are still some areas passable at two levels which makes for more complex navigation.
Registration/Start location is at the Granville Island Picnic Pavilion: between the Waterfront Theatre and Sutcliffe Park. There are bus stops nearby on West 2nd and West 4th, south west of the registration/start location.
Parking: There is a pay parking ($1 per hour) until 10pm in Granville Island car parks.
Courses:
Beginner: Course suitable for beginners. Please arrive early for instruction. Running distance about 1.2km, with 8 controls and very little climb.
Intermediate (3.3km) and Advanced (4.4km): The courses offer similar levels of sprint orienteering difficulty at different distances with the intent of offering complex route choices. The advanced course has more deliberately longer legs where you should look ahead and try to plan your route for the following shorter legs.
Schedule:
18:00 Registration opens.
18:10 to 18:40 Coaching for beginners
18:30 to 19:15 Individual starts
20:00 Course closes, all participants must report to the Finish before leaving.
Wednesday Evening Training
- What should I bring? Wear something comfortable that you don't mind getting a little dirty! If it's wet outside, you might want to consider a change of shoes and socks! A headlamp or flashlight and reflective clothing is critical in the winter months (late September to April). A compass is optional (we have extra ones for borrowing). For added safety, a whistle is mandatory for all GVOC events. Read more in the WET Introduction to Orienteering.
When should I sign up? Please sign up by Tuesday night so that we can print enough maps, although we have extra maps if you forget.
How much does it cost? All WETs are free with yearly membership.
Club membership: See details on the club home page. Please complete before your first event!
