Map: Kits 10th Ave

Enjoy one of the last WETs of the year where you can run (at least partially) in daylight. But bring your headlamp just in case! We have taken advantage of this map of dense urban streets, avenues, lanes and small parks to set courses offering considerable route choice and a mix of long and short legs to practice ‘looking and planning ahead’.

Please sign up by Tuesday night (at Midnight) so that we can print enough maps. Bring your Control Description holders as separate control descriptions will be available for the intermediate and advanced courses. Control descriptions will also be printed on the maps.

The KITS-Tenth Ave map is at the sprint map standard of 1:4000 scale. It covers a busy area and participants should take care to cross all roads safely. One area is out of bounds because of subway construction.

Registration/Start location is in Rosemary Brown Park: a “pocket park” at the intersection of West 11th Ave and Vine Street. There are bus stops on West Broadway, two blocks north of the registration/start location.

Parking: There is a free parking at this time of day near the registration on the east side of Vine Street from 12th Avenue to Broadway and on West 12th south side (eastbound) alongside Connaught Park. There is also free parking in the Kitsilano Ice Rink car park two blocks west.

Courses:

Beginner: Course suitable for beginners. Please arrive early for instruction. Running distance about 2km, with about 11 controls and very little climb.

Intermediate and Advanced: The courses offer similar levels of sprint orienteering difficulty with complex route choices, but at different distances. The advanced course has more deliberately longer legs where you should look ahead and try to plan your route for the following shorter legs. Ideally you should never leave a control without having a planned route to the next control. Take advantage of the longer legs to plan as many controls ahead as you can, planning your route and memorizing as much detail as you can.

Schedule:

18:00 Registration opens.

18:10 to 18:40 Coaching for beginners

18:30 to 19:30 Individual starts

20:00 Course closes, all participants must report to the Finish before leaving.

Wednesday Evening Training

  • What should I bring? Wear something comfortable that you don't mind getting a little dirty! If it's wet outside, you might want to consider a change of shoes and socks! A headlamp or flashlight and reflective clothing is critical in the winter months (late September to April). A compass is optional (we have extra ones for borrowing). For added safety, a whistle is mandatory for all GVOC events. Read more in the WET Introduction to Orienteering.

When should I sign up? Please sign up by Tuesday night so that we can print enough maps, although we have extra maps if you forget.

How much does it cost? All WETs are free with yearly membership.

Club membership: See details on the club home page. Please complete before your first event!
