Organizer: Caoimhe Murray (Event Director)

Map: Capilano University

This week we'll have a training on reading ahead and a pot luck dinner after

Pot Luck Dinner: Come hang out after for a pot luck dinner at Purcell Woods (unit number to be provided at the event). It's less than 5 minutes walk from the start and we'll have extra food so we'd really like to see you even if you don't have time to bring something to share.

Training: Capilano University and the surrounding area is a nice mix of complex urban campus and small forest areas. The training will focus on reading ahead by having long legs followed by clusters of short legs ie. a bunch of controls close together. The idea is to move as quickly as you can on the long leg while making a plan for the short legs so that you can move through the cluster of controls without stopping to look at the map too much. I'm working on a document with more details on the training so that you can get the most out of it. I'll add it once it's done.

Courses: There will be an easier and a harder course. They will be share some sections but the longer / harder course will cover more distance and have some more challenging control clusters.

Meeting location: We'll meet under the covered structure between the Alder and Arbutus buildings. If you're coming in from the main road, it'll be the second, larger covered structure so keep going past the first one and you'll find us.

Traffic Hazard: Although the campus is quite quiet in the evenings there are lots of roads and parking lots on the map so make sure that you are aware of your surroundings and keeping an eye out for traffic at all times. If your course crosses Lillooet Rd be especially aware of traffic as this road is quite busy and many people drive quite fast on it. There are 3 controlled pedestrian crossings you can use.

Parking: There is free parking on Lillooet Rd or paid parking at the lots of Capilano University. If you're coming to the Pot Luck (and you should!) and are using paid parking, the closest parking lot is at the corner of Skeena Rd and Tantalus Rd, here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/6PmkA3XqWegRnFCB9

Wednesday Evening Training

  • What should I bring? Wear something comfortable that you don't mind getting a little dirty! If it's wet outside, you might want to consider a change of shoes and socks! A headlamp or flashlight and reflective clothing is critical in the winter months (late September to April). A compass is optional (we have extra ones for borrowing). For added safety, a whistle is mandatory for all GVOC events. Read more in the WET Introduction to Orienteering.

When should I sign up? Please sign up by Tuesday night so that we can print enough maps, although we have extra maps if you forget.

How much does it cost? All WETs are free with yearly membership.

Club membership: See details on the club home page. Please complete before your first event!
