Burke Mtn Training Social
April 6th 2025 10:00am - 12:00pm
Organizers: Alton Ho (Event Director), Robyn Astridge (Event Director)
Event Information
- This month's WJR is a training event at Burke Mountain geared towards those looking to improve on their forest orienteering skills. There will be orienteering flags in the terrain; however, we are not using SI as this is a training event.
- There will be three training loops:
- Short Middle Distance Simulation
- Bearings
- Corridor
- Here is a document outlining the training exercises: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-KmgM7aN3PGNVg... Please do a read through when you get the chance :) It explains the goals and instructions for each training exercise.
- This event is geared toward Intermediate/Advanced orienteers. If you have done WETs and were fine with it you are welcome to join. If you are
new to orienteering and would like to participate in an event, please come out to our beginner-friendly WET (Wednesday Evening Training) events. We have several coming up in April:
- 9 April at Trout Lake
- 16 April at Garden City
- 23 April at Capilano University
Schedule
- 9:30-10:00 Registration.
- 10:00-13:00 Training is open. Last allowed start is 12:15.
- 10:00-12:00 Coached session.
- We will likely divide the group into smaller groups, depending on numbers.
Registration
- We will have coaching available throughout the event. When registering, you will be asked whether you wish to be coached. This will consist of pointers, tips, tricks, and, if desired, a shadow during the loops.
- The cost is the same regardless of whether you choose to be coached.
- We recommend anyone wanting to attend who has little to no experience in forest orienteering sign up to be coached.
- Registration deadline is midnight on Friday, 4 April. Please make sure to register before then to ensure maps are printed for you. Cost is standard WJR prices of $15 for Seniors (> 20 years old as of 31 December 2025) and $10 for Juniors (<= 20 years old as of 31 December 2025).
Meeting Location
- Registration will be located at the Hustler trailhead on Harper road (pin below).
- There is ample parking along Harper road next to registration.
- There are no bathrooms. Plan to make a pit stop in Port Coquitlam or in Coquitlam on the way. A quick Google Maps search shows there is a Save On Foods located at Prairie Avenue and Coast Meridian Rd: https://maps.app.goo.gl/kyTo3mqXcYRacKzq5, a Subway across the street, and a 7-Eleven a little further North.
Notes
- Dress appropriately for the weather, and bring a map bag.
- If you have one, bring a control description holder.
