This second event of the Mini Series will be a WINTER event! The snowy conditions are perfect and fun in the nice and open Confederation Park. If we are lucky, we might have a foggy evening which will spice things up.

There will be two courses offered:

  • Advanced: 5 km, 34 controls
  • Beginner: 2.5km, 15 controls

The event lasts from 18:30 to 20:30; no one will be allowed to start after 19:45. Please arrive at 18:00 if you are new to orienteering so you can receive some coaching.

Map Specifics

  • Scale: 1:4000
  • Contour Interval: 2.5 m

Parking/Transportation

The meeting location is at the shelter close to the school on the eastern side of the map. There are bathrooms and shelter. There is free parking in the park close to this shelter. Additionally, there are many bussing options along Hastings (R5, 160 coming from Coquitlam and Port Moody) and also some routes that come from the south (130, 129).

Course Notes

  • The weather is expected to be cloudy and slightly above 0 C.
  • There is at least 10-15 cm in most of the park on Tuesday morning, which is likely to stay until Wednesday evening.
  • Luckily, Confederation park is mostly flat and grassy, paved or gravel terrain, which covered by snow is great fun!!
  • Running shoes with good grip should be fine. Icy sections might be found, but would be rare and easy to avoid. If you want to enjoy the winter fun, alternative winter gear (spikes, snowshoes, or skis) will be allowed and encouraged!
  • Don't forget to bring your headlamp! It still gets dark around 18:00.
  • There are some map-specific comments I'd like to make:
    • in various places, trees/man-made objects have been removed/added
    • the vegetation does not match well (green could be white, even more now with all the snow ;) ) but the controls are placed in locations where that should not affect the runners.
    • playgrounds are mapped as clusters of man-made objects
    • It will be important to stay focused and know all the time which is your current location and most importantly which leg you are doing!
  • As usual, please be mindful of other park users.
  • Don't forget your SI stick!
  • Don't forget to bring your own map bags (if you have them). They'll need to be legal size.

It will be cold and probably wet, so dress warmly and bring lots of layers! A dry pair of shoes wouldn't hurt either ;)
