The Stawamus Chief Surprise or "Don't fall off the edge!"
Hike up to the top of the Chief, have a nice picnic while enjoying the astounding views and then do some very exotic orienteering!
NOTE! This event will only take place in dry weather. I will send an email on Friday evening to let everyone know if it is going ahead!
The picnic and start area will be at the Zodiac Summit, which is more quiet and away from the throngs of tourists. The Zodiac Summit is between the Second and Third Peak. The hike up to the top of the Chief is comparable to the Grouse Grind, about 600 meter climb in 2.5 km. To get to Zodiac Summit, make sure to take the trail to the Second and Third Peak. This trail forks off to the right about 1/3 of the way up.
The short orienteering course, named Vertigo, will start between 1 pm and 2 pm. It will be SI timed! Bring your sticks! The course will be around 2.5 km long, as the crow flies, but the terrain is kind of... slow. Map scale is 1:2500 with lots of detail. Trail running shoes recommended (spikes are not so good on the granite).
Please register for the event by Thursday, June 5!
