Map: Confederation Park

Description

This WET will be an opportunity to work on your navigation skills! Taking advantage of the nice and open terrain of Confederation Park, this time the compass will be your greatest ally. (This park has been used a few times recently, let's test how much your familiarity of the place actually helps in the FOG ;) ).

Basically, a Fog-O map is mostly blank, and only shows the immediate terrain around the controls (map islands), and that's it. The rest of the map is unknown and that's the fun part of this. To navigate from one control to the other, it's critical to take a bearing, follow it, and estimate the distance you travel, so you get to find yourself on the little map islands. At night this is even more interesting, and good luck if you get a bit lost in the white emptiness!

2 Fog-O courses (Long/short) will be offered, and a regular point to point also will be an option.

If we are lucky, we might get some actual Fog to make this more interesting!

Schedule

6:15pm Introduction to Orienteering for Beginners

6:30pm Starts

8:00 pm Course Closure, participants must report to the Finish before leaving.

Courses

Fog-O Long: 5.5km, with lots of controls and changes in direction.

FOg-O Short: 3.5km, with a short cut that skips the western part of the map, but with most of the controls and fog!

Regular: 3k, a traditional point to point course to enjoy a nice evening in the park.

Safety Precautions

Always use good judgement and common sense. Carry a whistle at all times. Headlamps are essential to see and be seen. Take care when crossing roads and parking lots. Watch out for other runners, cyclists, and trail/sidewalk users.
