Beginner Point-to-Point

Otervals!

Organizers: Emily Ross (Event Director), Karen Lachance (Membership)

Map: Downtown

Description

Enjoy the urban downtown map for either a standard point-to-point course for beginners or a set of exciting o-tervals in groups of 3! If you do not wish to do o-tervals, you can just loop together the sets of controls and run it like a standard point-to-point. It'll be a good opportunity to practice your sprinting before Sage Stomp!

Schedule

6:15 pm - Introduction to Orienteering for Beginners

6:30 pm - Starts begin for both courses

8:00 pm - Course Closure, participants must report to the Finish by Course Closure Time.

Courses:

There are two courses as described above. A standard point-to-point course for beginners, and o-tervals that are designed to be completed in groups of three (of approximately the same speed). Each member in the group will have a different map with an interval of approximately the same distance. Each interval will have about 3 or so controls, that you try to run at a fast pace. Once you get to the end of that interval, you regroup and then jog or walk to the next interval and repeat! Groups will be formed at the start. If you do not want to do o-tervals, you can run the course as a standard point-to-point; however, bear in the mind that the course was not designed for that.

Safety Precautions:

Downtown is very busy with traffic and pedestrians. Please follow all traffic lights, pay special attention crossing roads, and keep on pedestrian pathways. Please do not run into any pedestrians!

Parking/Start/Finish Locations:

The meeting place will be at the south steps of the Art Gallery near Hornby and Robson street near the patio for the restaurant (see map below) (PLEASE NOTE: THIS HAS CHANGED FROM THE ORIGINAL POSTING).   Parking is limited and almost always for a fee downtown. There is paid parking mearny: Hotel Vancouver parkade (enter from Hornby Street), Pacific Centre Mall parkade (enter from Howe Street) and Robson Square Complex (enter from Howe Street). Consider taking transit or biking. Burrard sky train and Vancouver City Centre Station is a couple of blocks away and there are many bus stops near by.

Post-Event Dining:
