Primary Organizers: Bruce Rennie, Robyn Rennie
Event Director/Course Planner: Bruce Rennie , Membership/Registrar: , Trainer: Graeme Rennie
Description
Deep Cove is a 1:5000 map with lots of 2.5m contours and good sized hills. Our focus is to keep the road running to a minimum and have very short challenging legs in the forest. You can practice your forest 'O' skills of "punch-and-go", quick bearings and fast orientation of the map, in thick vegetation.
With the summer weather, the undergrowth is quite dense. Full body covering and gaiters are recommended, despite the heat. Also, the ground underfoot in the forest can be uneven and proper foot and ankle protection is recommended.
Schedule
6:00PM Introduction to Orienteering for Beginners
6:15PM Discussion of contours, vegetation, control sites and attack points. Useful for tonight and in preparation for COC at Whistler.
6:30PM Starts begin for both courses
8:00PM Course Closure, participants must report to the Finish by Course Closure Time.
Courses:
Two courses will be offered
1) Intermediate is Shorter at approx 1.8km and less technical, with approx 10 controls. There are some forest controls, on less technical features i.e. path junctions, cliff base etc.
2) Advanced is Longer at approx 3.2km and more technical with over 20 controls. Many are short legs in the forest, designed to practice forest O skills, with easier legs between the forest areas.
Safety Precautions:
Clothing appropriate to thick undergrowth. Shoes & gaiters for uneven terrain. Safety bearing is North.
Parking/Start/Finish Locations:
Start and Finish to the east of Deep Cove Canoe & Kayak. Limited parking in the nearby (west) lot, with additional parking in the lot to the south of the start, up the hill. There is good parking at Cove Cliff Elementary school, on Banbury Rd at Cliffmont Rd, to the south of the event start.
Post-Event Dining: Options are picnic at Deep Cove. Should be no bugs, due to hot weather. Or fine dining in Deep Cove. Or Raven pub...
