Description for this WET

Primary Organizers:

Event Director/Course Planner, Membership/Registrar, Trainer

Results: Sixteen intrepid orienteers showed up to try their hand at the training challenges. I chose to drop the "memory-mirrored" map due to weather and substitute "Honey Pot Identification". Three blatantly obvious pin flags were placed on similar features on the expected route, and close to the desired control location. The control description identified the correct location. Eight competitors correctly identified all 3 locations with both a correct pin placement and the 'honey pot' pin flag. Spartan apples were given as reward for the careful map/control description reading.

The "control description" training exercise was enthusiastically accepted and led to much discussion post race. As course setter, I will have to take blame for the 'minor' errors of description for sites 1, 10, 15 (led to a couple of 'no finds' due to the description), 'Honey Pot' controls were placed at sites 9, 17 and 22.

You can look forward to similar events in 2014! Sincerely, Geo.

Description

This week's WET training takes place at our smallest map: "Minoru Park, Richmond". One course will be offered, with three training challenges, designed to slow the elite orienteers so that all will cover the same course in the same time.

Course 1 will be a point to point 3.8 km course that covers both the brightly lit parking lots, playing fields and gardens at the north end. Please note cars are given the right of way and cannot see you!

Course 2 will be the identical course, but you ‎WILL HAVE TO READ the control description to determine where on the feature the control is placed. The centre of the circle WILL NOT BE the location of the control. For example, a long linear hill may have circle at the centre of the hill. The actual location if the pin flag will be at the North-Eastern foot. Best for orienteers that score 600 to 800 points for speed each week.

Course 3 will be the identical course, but a "map memory". Best suited for elite orienteers that score 800 to 1000 points. You will need to read the normal control description (supplied) but the map will be a MIRROR IMAGE (induces vertigo...)

BONUS: Spartan apples for those that note the 3 extra pin flags that will be on your line of travel but occur sooner than the location described on your 'control description' or map (Course 1).

If weather is inclement, I will drop Challenge 3 or possibly 2.
