Map: Ambleside Park

Join us for an evening of orienteering in beautiful Ambleside Park in West Vancouver. While it may not be hot enough for a dip after the run, you can still enjoy a beach picnic or a sunset stroll.

There are two courses: Short and Long. The Short course is 2 kilometres, and is suitable for beginners. It loops around John Lawson and Ambleside parks, stays close to the beach and does not cross any major roads.

The Long course is 4.5 km and is a good fit for intermediate runners (and it'll be a quick sprint for the advanced folks). It covers a similar area to the Short course, but also ventures into Memorial Park, which if you haven’t been to, you should check out! Note that this course crosses Marine Drive, please be very careful and only cross at marked crosswalks/intersections.

Safety Precautions

Always use good judgement and common sense. Carry a whistle at all times. Take care when crossing roads and parking lots. Watch out for other runners, cyclists, and trail/sidewalk users.

Note: please cross the railway line at valid crossing points only. They are clearly marked on the map. Also please look out for trains and vehicles at all times.

Parking/Start Location:

We'll meet at the covered picnic area in John Lawson Park, just south-east of 16th Street and Argyle Avenue. See map below.

There is a parking lot nearby, but please check the posted rules as it may be paid parking due to recent changes. There may be free street parking in the area, with a 2 or 4 hour limit. The park is also easily accessible by transit off Marine Drive just a block away.

Wednesday Evening Training

  • What should I bring? Wear something comfortable that you don't mind getting a little dirty! If it's wet outside, you might want to consider a change of shoes and socks! A headlamp or flashlight and reflective clothing is critical in the winter months (late September to April). A compass is optional (we have extra ones for borrowing). For added safety, a whistle is mandatory for all GVOC events. Read more in the WET Introduction to Orienteering.

When should I sign up? Please sign up by Tuesday night so that we can print enough maps, although we have extra maps if you forget.

How much does it cost? All WETs are free with yearly membership.

Club membership: See details on the club home page. Please complete before your first event!
