Description
We welcome new and current members for a fun event at Queen Elizabeth Park! There will be FIVE short loops that all start and finish at the same location. You can choose which and how many of those five loops to complete! Loops will increase in difficulty, so those new to the sport can dip their toes in the first loop or two and decide whether they want to try all four. Bring a friend to try out orienteering!!
Schedule
6:15pm to 6:45pm : Introduction to Orienteering for Beginners
6:30pm to 7:30pm : Starts
8pm : Event Finishes - all participants must report to the Finish before leaving. Equipment will be taken down.
Event Location
Registration and Start is at the top of Queen Elizabeth Park, between the "Dancing Waters" fountain and the large car park. See map below and look for the "Orienteering" signs or a big crowd of people in running gear!
Courses
Five loop options - loops 1 -5 from 1-1.5 kms each.
You can decide at the event how many loops and in which order. New orienteers should start with the easier loops. Each course will start from the same location and the loop will end in the same location. That way, after each loop you can decide whether to stop for the evening, or try another loop!
*As always, NEVER run through gardens, flowers, or areas mapped as olive green. If it looks like a maintained garden or nice, go around!
Safety Precautions
Always use good judgement and common sense. Carry a whistle at all times. Headlamps are essential to see and be seen. Take care when crossing roads and parking lots. QE Park is a very popular summer destination, so watch out for other runners, cyclists, and trail/sidewalk users.
Parking
There is paid-parking at the top of Queen Elizabeth Park (marked on map below). You can also find some free street parking and walk up. Transit is also a GREAT option and it's not a long walk from the W. King Edward or W. 41st Skytrain stations and several bus routes.
Post-Event Dining
Continue the socializations over dinner! Some people may wish to get together at a restaurant for a dinner. Location usually decided after the event.
