Map: Cypress Falls

This event will cover a fun mix of trail and forest orienteering in the Cypress Falls area.

Pin flags will be out from early morning on Saturday, November 27th (by 8am) until end of day Tuesday, November 30th so you can run this course at any time that works for you. Hopefully the pin flags will stay in place for the duration but sometimes they do get moved by members of the public so don't spend too long if you think you're in the right place and don't see any pin flags!

Courses

Beginner - 2-3 km of fairly easy navigation on good trails with minimal elevation change.

Intermediate - score-o. Choose your own route to find as few or as many controls as you like. Distance, elevation and difficulty will depend on what you choose. This course combines the beginner and advanced controls so could be fairly long if you want to get them all.

Advanced - ~4 km as the crow flies so expect to do over 6 km (maybe quite a bit more depending on your route choices!). There is some elevation and lots of route choice. There are a couple of natural loops if you want to do a shorter version or, perhaps, consider the intermediate score-o for something shorter.

Maps

Because our insurance policy requires that everyone who participates in a GVOC event is a member of the club, please email gvoc.membership@gmail.com for a copy of the event map.

You can use a printed map or a digital map (MapRun) for this event. Even if you are running with a paper map, it can be fun to record your route on MapRun to see where you went. MapRun can also be helpful to confirm your location if one of the pin flags has been removed.

The map file will be emailed to those who have signed up either Thursday, November 25th or Friday, November 26th for you to print yourself.

Remember that these events are to be run/walked obeying all the provincial health recommendations currently in place. However, for your personal safety please let somebody know where you are and what you are doing. These are not sanctioned events; we don't retain any liability for participants. This is a do it at your own risk, training suggestion. This map has significant cliffs and steep drop offs - use your own discretion and take care when doing the courses.

MapRun6

This event is available in MapRun6 under “Select an Event > Canada > British Columbia > Vancouver > 2021 >Cypress Falls”. Once again the phone is the weak link in this system as it takes a moment to catch up with you as you pass through a control. I suggest starting the event and making sure that you have passed through the start. Then turn off the volume and put the phone away. Make sure that you pass through the finish at the end and it will give you a track to see where you went. If you get navigationally challenged you can pull out the phone to check where you are.

GPS watch or timing device tracks can also be uploaded on the MapRun6 website (search for Cypress Falls Scramble) to compare your route to others.
