Map: Vanier Park

In the heart of Kitsilano, Vanier Park is a beautiful island of green lawns, heritage buildings and playgrounds, wrapped by the beach and ocean. It is not a highly technical area for orienteering, but with all that open space, you can have a great run here while still maintaining the obligatory social distancing. The park can be quite busy on weekends and after school gets out, so you might want to time your visit accordingly.

Two courses are on offer for the week - the 4.7 km 'longer' course shares many controls with its 2.8 km 'shorter' cousin, but the control sequence is quite different. They both have modest technical difficulty. There are no physical control markers in the terrain - this is purely a 'virtual' O training event, intended for use with the MapRunF app (see below) on your phone. The Start is located in the parking lot of the Vancouver Maritime Museum (pay parking).

Because our insurance policy requires that everyone who participates in a GVOC event be a member of the club, please email gvoc.membership@gmail.com for a pdf copy of the event map.

Remember that these events are to be run/walked individually, obeying all the social distancing recommendations currently in place. However, for your personal safety please let somebody know where you are, and what you are doing. These are not sanctioned events; we don't retain any liability for participants. This is a do-at-your-own-risk, training suggestion.

MapRunF

The Vanier Park courses can be accessed in the MapRunF app under "Select an Event > Canada > British Columbia > Vancouver > Wednesday Evening Training". For instructions on setting up the phone app, see the pdf document "How to setup and run MapRunF". Note that if you have a phone that puts the GPS into sleep mode which causes issues when attempting to use it for this activity, there is another app called GPS Connected which can also be downloaded and used to lock the GPS to the satellites. Remember to unlock it when you have finished the course.
