BCIT Weekly Virtual Training
March 30th 2020 8:00am - April 5th 2020 11:59pm
Organizers: Bruce Rennie (Controller), Robyn Rennie (Event Director), Joanne Woods (Membership)
Map: BCIT
For this second installment of our Virtual WET, we're offering 2 course options at BCIT: A longer and a shorter course. The terrain around the BCIT Campus is a mix of urban-park, so both courses are suitable for beginners to more advanced participants, and largely depend on how long you'd like to get outside for and how much fresh air is required :)
Remember that these events are to be run/walked individually obeying all the social distances recommendations currently in place. However for your personal safety please let somebody know where you are and what you are doing.
Last week we tested a Cellphone App called MapRunF that adds some interest to the virtual Orienteering experience. The app can be used with this event also. (- after a lot of help from Daniel Widman and the MapRunF developer). Notes on how to setup the app are here. HowTo.pdf Basically the app allows the phone to trace your route around the course and beep when you pass a virtual control location. Sometimes it beeps before you get to the actual location, sometimes after you leave and, if your phone is like mine, it sometimes doesn’t beep at all. However with our testing we have found that it works more often than it doesn’t so provides some interest to your training. Let me know how you find it and whether it makes you more likely to participate. Personally using a printed map and leaving the phone to beep away in my pocket works the best for me. Others have enjoyed being able to zoom into the map on their phone. It will give you a track and a time at the end. Don’t worry if it shows you have mispunched – this seems to be a common result.
I have added courses here so feel free to indicate that you are going to run a course and then email the Event director your time once you have completed it.
Because our insurance policy requires that everyone who participates in a GVOC event is a member of the club, please email gvoc.membership@gmail.com for a copy of the event map.
Start and Finish are in the large parking lots off Wayburne Ave on the East side of the campus.
