Map: Downtown

Description

Come and discover obscure urban nooks and crannies on the newly updated and expanded Downtown map (to be unveiled at the event).

Schedule

6:15pm Introduction to Orienteering for Beginners

6:30pm Starts

8pm Course Closure, participants must report to the Finish before leaving.

Courses

The LONG and MEDIUM courses have the same level of technical difficulty; the training focus is on interpreting how different building levels are represented on the map (tunnels, overpasses, stairs, building throughways) and on route choice (where possible within a city block system). It may be useful to pay attention to the control descriptions.

The SHORT course is suitable for those wanting a short and easier option that avoids most of the multi-level sections.

Safety Precautions

Always use good judgement and common sense. Carry a whistle at all times. Headlamps are essential to see and be seen. Take care when crossing roads and parking lots. Watch out for other runners, cyclists, and trail/sidewalk users. Burrard Street is particularly busy and marked out of bounds except at street crossings.

Parking/Start Location:

Meet on the north side of the Vancouver Art Gallery (not our usual south side spot), as indicated on the map below.

Paid parking is available in the Hotel Vancouver parkade (enter from Hornby Street), Pacific Centre Mall parkade (enter from Howe Street) and Robson Square Complex (enter from Howe Street). Consider biking or taking transit; Burrard sky train station and Vancouver City Centre station are a few blocks away and there are many bus stops near by.

Post-Event Dining

Suggestion: Chipotle Mexican Grill, 818 Howe Street (very near event, inexpensive, open until 10 pm)
