Downtown Wednesday Evening Training
November 29th 2017 6:30pm - 8:00pm
Organizers: Emily Ross (Event Director), Joanne Woods (Membership), Jules Tough (Membership), Stan Woods (Coach)
Map: Downtown
Description
Downtown is the perfect venue for a THOMASS format (aka point to point/score o combo). Complete several controls in order before arriving to a box. In the box, you may complete the controls in any order you wish. It's the perfect time to try to outsmart your fellow club members. You will be able to drop a certain number of controls in the box based on your age category/sex. If this is confusing, come on out anyways and it will be explained.
Schedule
6:15pm Introduction to Orienteering for Beginners
6:30pm Starts
8pm Course Closure, participants must report to the Finish before leaving.
Courses
There will be a beginner point to point course that is shorter in length and has easy technical difficulty. The point to point/score o combo course is acceptable for those who have been orienteering a couple of times before.
Safety Precautions
Always use good judgement and common sense. Carry a whistle at all times. Headlamps are essential to see and be seen. Take care when crossing roads and parking lots. PLEASE CROSS AT CROSS WALKS ONLY AS DOWNTOWN IS VERY BUSY. Watch out for other runners, cyclists, and trail/sidewalk users.
Parking/Start Location
The meeting place will be in between the steps of the Art Gallery by their patio restaurant and the Robson Square rink. (see map below). Parking is limited and almost always for a fee downtown. There is paid parking nearby: Hotel Vancouver parkade (enter from Hornby Street), Pacific Centre Mall parkade (enter from Howe Street) and Robson Square Complex (enter from Howe Street). Consider taking transit or biking. Burrard sky train and Vancouver City Centre Station is a couple of blocks away and there are many bus stops near by.
