Map: Deer Lake North

Description

Deer Lake North is an interesting mix of a park and urban sprint map featuring the Shadbolt Centre, the Burnaby Art Gallery and City Hall area, some forest trails and the lake on the south edge. There will be a beginner (1.7KM) and an advanced course (3.5KM) with some slight hills and short trail sections. A couple cautions:

  • the advanced course crosses a number of streets so please look both ways! Canada Way is out of bounds and can only be crossed using the pedestrian bridge
  • please avoid crossing any of the many flower beds and shrubbery areas

The training theme for this week is to plan your route backwards i.e.start planning your route by looking at the control you're going to and deciding what direction you should approach it from (rather than my approach of running at top speed and worrying about that fence later...).

Schedule

6:15pm Introduction to Orienteering for Beginners

6:30pm Starts

8pm Course Closure, participants must report to the Finish before leaving.

Safety Precautions

Carry a whistle at all times. Headlamps are essential on the longer course. Take care when crossing roads and parking lots.

Parking/Start/Finish Locations

The start is to the east of the Shadbolt Centre. There are a number of nearby parking lots, including just to the north of the start.
