Without volunteers, GVOC events cannot take place! The 2014 calendar of WETs remains to be filled.
If you are interested in volunteering to organize a WET please let us know.
ALSO: we are also currently recruiting for volunteers to help with COCs in August 2014. See http://gvoc.whyjustrun.ca/pages/38 for more information on some of the areas where we need help.
Description for this WET
Primary Organizers:
Alan Richards (Event Director/Course Planner)
Hilary Anderson (Trainer)
Description
Garden City Park is a fairly small city park in Richmond and our map features two distinct sections: one is park with trees, ponds, and playgrounds, and the other consists of two schools and their playing fields. Since this is Richmond there are no hills anywhere. The advanced course also heads down to a second nearby park with some interesting little windy trails. Please stay off the garden plots and stick to the paths or grass within this park.
Schedule
6:30 pm: Introduction to Orienteering for Beginners
6:30 pm: Starts begin
8:00 pm: Course Closure, participants must report to the Finish by Course Closure Time.
Courses:
Two courses will be offered:
For Beginners or Families there will be an Easy course covering the main paths of the park. Distance is around 2km.
For Intermediate or Expert orienteers there will be a longer course covering both parks. Use caution when crossing Granville Avenue. Distance is around 4.5km.
Safety Precautions:
On the advanced course please watch for traffic along the roads and especially when crossing Granville Avenue. Depending on the weather, some paths and grassy slopes may be slippery and sections may be wet and soggy.
The playing fields have been quiet recently, but if any are in use please avoid running through people's games.
Parking/Start/Finish Locations:
Start/Finish is as marked on the map in the parking lot off Granville Avenue. Parking is free. There are public washrooms near the playground at the North side of the park - a short walk (200m) away but harder to access by car.
It is 1.6km from the Brighouse Skytrain station, although several buses from there will get you closer. The 404 bus stops right in front of the start location.
Post-Event Dining:
TBD
Acknowledgements:
