Map: Renfrew Ravine

Results are posted, please let me know if there are any corrections. Also happy to receive feedback on the map if you have the time!

Description

Expanded map! I'm just back from New Zealand and I have had some spare time so I have expanded the map to the south all the way to the 29th Ave Skytrain station. Still Creek flows through the Ravine and is one of two open creeks flowing in Vancouver. The expanded map has some new ravine areas with some trails, a crossable creek, a bit of forest (and some blackberries), as well as a fun high school area. Plus the Renfrew Ravine area you know from Sprint Camp and past WETs has had some upgrades.

The best thing about a new/expanded map is that the information on the map is as fresh as it gets. The bad part is that this is one of my first maps and it's not had a good second set of eyes.

So participants please beware that there will likely be some mistakes on the map (but that's part of the fun). And one of the jobs for everyone in this WET will be to give me some constructive feedback and to point out some areas to improve the map. I think the mapping is reasonably correct, except the vegetation is so-so and needs some work (the courses will take this into consideration).

Headlamps will be needed and there will be some road crossings.

On the longer courses expect some steep trail and also some long street legs. So your best all-round shoes. If it’s wet it could be muddy.

More information closer to Wednesday. Please sign up by Wednesday noon so I can print the maps!

Schedule

6:15pm Introduction to Orienteering for Beginners

6:30pm Starts

8:00 pm Course Closure, participants must report to the Finish before leaving.

Courses

There will three traditional sprint-'ish courses:

  • Expert: explore some of the new areas with some forest, steep terrain, and a few longer road legs
  • Intermediate: an abridged version of the Expert course including some of the new areas but with a bit less running
  • Beginner: a course sticking to the traditional Renfrew Ravine area and suitable for new orienteers

For the Expert and Intermediate courses, please beware that this is a first run on a new map and there will likely be some mistakes on the map (but that's part of the fun right?). The Renfrew Ravine map has also had some updates. The courses will take into account the "weaker" areas of the map (and all the blackberry bushes).

Safety Precautions

It will be dark enough that you will need a headlamp!

There are a few road crossings. This is a WET and there is no reason to take any risks. Please be careful.

You may want to run in trail shoes, but no spikes. There is some mud around and it can be slippery.

Parking/Start Location:

Meet at the front entrance of the library at 22nd and Nootka.
