Description

We kicked off June with an evening of sunshine and glimmering ocean vistas at UBC's WET. Thank you to everyone who came out - especially those of you who jumped in to help with some extra training sessions and membership duties! I couldn't have pulled off this busy night without you :).

This week's WET will be held at the University of British Columbia. The two courses are standard point-to-point. UBC is a beautiful campus, and you will have some opportunities to run through wooded areas. The majority of the course, however, takes place in the heart of campus. Be prepared for some interesting navigational challenges between buildings!

On that note, UBC very much lives up to another name: "The University of Building Construction". Because of this, the map contains a handful of construction sites. I have set the courses to avoid these areas, but please be aware of them anyways. There are also a few unmapped/outdated buildings. These I also attempted to avoid but, should you come across one, let's call it an extra navigational challenge ;).

Sign up by Tuesday night to guarantee yourself a map!

Schedule

6:30 Introduction to Orienteering for Beginners

6:30 Starts begin for both courses

8:00 Course Closure, participants must report to the Finish by Course Closure Time.

Courses:

Two courses will be offered, one of which is Shorter/Easier depending on terrain, and is appropriate for families.

The other course is Longer/Harder depending on terrain.

Safety Precautions:

Do not enter construction sites. Be careful when crossing streets and use crosswalks when possible - there are a surprising number of cars on campus. Bring a whistle with you.

Parking/Start/Finish Locations:

We will be meeting in the plaza on the northwest side of the Student Union Building. The SUB is visible from the main bus loop and is sandwiched between the aquatic and student rec centres.

UBC has PAID parking only. There is a small lot adjacent to the main bus loop. If that is full, the next closest option is the North Parkade (turn down Student Union Boulevard off of Wesbrook Mall).

Acknowledgements:

Without volunteers, these events cannot take place. A hearty thanks to all those helping put this event on. If you would like to volunteer/help at upcoming WETs/WJRs or would like to organize a WET please let us know.
