To indicate those who ran the Advanced Point-to-Point course but not the Memory-O from those who did both I used the designation NC. This usually means non-competitive but tonight is intended not that way but simply as a term to distinguish the two groups. Let me know if I made any errors.

Description

The Jericho Beach map has many trails in open parkland and wooded areas. Some parts of the map are marked with the "do-not-enter" purple cross-hatching. These are ecologically sensitive areas or park areas still under development. Please do NOT enter/cross the purple-hatched areas!

Schedule

6:15 Introduction to Orienteering for Beginners

6:30 Starts begin

8:00 Course Closure, participants must report to the Finish by Course Closure Time.

Courses:

Two courses will be offered, both point-to-point courses.

The Easier/Shorter course has 16 controls over 2.2 km and is suitable for beginners/families.

The Longer/Harder course has two parts: a regular point-to-point of 12 controls over 3.4 km with the focus on route choice, and an additional Memory-O loop of 8 controls over 1.8 km inserted at control 9. You may skip the Memory-O to make the course easier and shorter. You may make this decision when you are on the course and can see how you are doing. Course closing time is 8:00 pm.

For the Memory-O component a map at each control will show the location of the next control but you cannot take the map with you. The aim of this exercise is to practice "map simplification" - choose your route to the control and select ~2 key features that will enable you to get there. If you do not find your control you will have to go back and look at the map again… Finally, each control flag has a letter on it. You must remember the sequence of letters and report it to the volunteer who is timing your finish!

Safety Precautions:

The Memory-O requires crossing one busy road. Please be careful and use the pedestrian crossing.

Parking/Start/Finish Locations:

Start is in the Parking lot just north of the Jericho Youth Hostel near the junction of Belmont and Discovery. Parking in this lot is $3 for each hour or part thereof. However there is free parking along NW Marine Drive, just a short walk from the start.

Post-Event Dining:

The weather forecast is excellent - bring a picnic and enjoy being at the beach! There will be cake...
